10 things you should have in your car - before the crisis hits

10 things you should always have in your car in case of an emergency

Are you planning a long trip during the summer holidays, or maybe you have to drive over the mountains to visit your aunt during the Christmas holidays? Whatever your reason for setting off on a road trip, it's a good idea to be well prepared. You may think that an accident could never happen to you, but it always happens to someone – suddenly you're stuck in a car with no power, no heat and no way to contact anyone. What do you do then, if you're sitting in your t-shirt with a dying phone?

We've put together a list of 10 things you should always have in your car, so you can come out of the crisis in a good mood.

1. First aid kit

The first thing on any survival list is, of course, first aid equipment. If an accident occurs and someone is injured, being able to perform basic first aid until help arrives can be lifesaving. A good first aid kit should contain plasters, compresses, bandages, disinfectant, scissors, tweezers, and painkillers. Add a multi-tool for easy access to everything you need.

2. Emergency warning and reflective equipment

In addition to the mandatory reflective vest and warning triangle, it is a good idea to bring a flashlight or headlamp. Extra light makes you visible on dark roads and can save lives in accidents.

3. Power bank

Your mobile phone is essential for contacting emergency services, but it needs power. Keep a charged power bank in your car, preferably one with a solar cell or hand crank. Extra charging cables are also smart.

4. Water and food

It's a good idea to stock up on a small emergency supply in your car with bottles that can withstand cold and heat, as well as non-perishable foods like energy bars or nut mixes. It can make a big difference in an emergency situation.

5. Warm clothes

Even if the car is warm, things can change quickly if you get stuck. Have warm sweaters, blankets or woolen underwear ready, especially in winter.

6. Jumper cables

A flat car battery is not uncommon. Have jumper cables available, or a jump starter to get you going without help.

7. Fuel

If you run out of fuel far from civilization, a jerry can is worth its weight in gold. Also remember extra windshield washer fluid – it's surprisingly important.

8. Snow tools

In winter, you should have more than just an ice scraper. A small shovel and possibly chains can be crucial to getting free from snow and ice.

9. Simple hygiene products

Toilet paper, disinfectant and maybe a small shovel make unexpected stays more livable – and a little more hygienic.

10. Card and cash

GPS and card payments are great – until they don't work. Have a paper map of the area you're going to and a few hundred rupiah in the glove compartment. Then you're prepared for anything.

Remember!

Check your supplies regularly. Water and batteries have a limited shelf life. Being well prepared makes it much easier to stay calm in the event of an emergency.
