Thinking about getting started with airsoft but a little worried it might hurt? Don't worry! In some cases, it can hurt, but most of the time you barely feel it. If you also wear proper clothing, you’ll hardly feel it at all.
Most clubs have restrictions on how powerful an airsoft gun can be, usually somewhere between 300 fps and 350 fps. Every airsoft gun is tested before you’re allowed to use it at a club. If it’s over the limit, you won’t be allowed to use it. There’s also a rule that if you get close enough to another person, you say “BANG” instead of shooting.
What does it feel like to get shot?
You don’t feel 10% of all shots at all. 85% of shots feel like someone lightly poked you with a finger. The remaining 5% of shots hurt. The pain goes away relatively quickly, in around 2 minutes. You might get a bruise, and in the worst cases, a wound. But that means up to 95% of all shots don’t hurt! Those are odds we can live with. If you’ve played paintball, you can compare it to paintball feeling more like a hit, while airsoft feels more like a bee sting.
How to protect yourself from getting hurt
The most important thing you can do is wear goggles,
a mask and gloves. The most painful places to get shot are the face, fingers, and inner thighs. It’s very important to protect your teeth from getting shot—you don’t want your million-dollar smile ruined! We therefore recommend using a mesh mask or a full-face mask rather than just a piece of fabric. You should wear full-finger gloves, not half-finger gloves, since getting hit on the fingers can really hurt! A helmet is also a very good idea to wear; all dedicated players have one.Not only can it hurt to get shot in the head, but you can also fall and hit your head! That’s why many large airsoft events and clubs require you to wear a helmet.
Other things to consider are that if you’re going to play outdoors in the woods, it can be a good idea to wear full-coverage clothing since bushes and trees can scratch you, in addition to protecting you from the BBs. The inner thigh is a sensitive area, and it hurts to get hit there, but it’s still not very common to be hit there.
