Preparedness at home: 5 things you MUST have in the house (2026 guide)

The Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB) has updated its advice: All Norwegian households should now be prepared to manage on their own for at least one week. But what does that actually mean in practice? Here’s the equipment that keeps you and your family safe.

Why is emergency preparedness important in 2026?

The world is more unpredictable than ever. Whether it’s due to extreme weather, cyberattacks on the power grid, or technical failures in the water supply, it’s your responsibility to make sure your home can function even when public services are disrupted. A good emergency supply stock isn’t about fear—it’s about peace of mind.

1. Clean water: The top priority

People can’t survive many days without water. The authorities recommend 20 liters per person. In addition to storing water in containers, you should have equipment for purifying water from nature or uncertain sources.

We recommend having both water containers and a portable water filter. See our selection of water purification equipment and hydration systems to ensure access to clean water in any situation.

2. Food that stores well (and tastes good)

Emergency food should have a long shelf life and be easy to prepare without electricity. Freeze-dried food is brilliant because it weighs little and lasts for many years without losing nutritional value.

Check out our selection of camping food and rations. Also remember an alternative heat source, such as a camping stove or gas burner, so you can heat your food if the stove is out of action.

3. Heat and light: Don’t get left sitting in the dark

If the power goes out in winter, it quickly gets cold. Wool blankets and sleeping bags are useful, but you also need a way to see what you’re doing.Good flashlights and headlamps with extra batteries are essential.

Explore our powerful flashlights and lighting built to withstand tough conditions. A good flashlight is often the cheapest insurance you can own.

Remember the radio: In a crisis, a DAB radio (preferably one that can be charged with solar power or a hand crank) is the safest source of information from the authorities when the internet and mobile network are down.

4. First aid and hygiene

In case of accidents, a proper first-aid kit is absolutely essential. You should also think about hygiene; wet wipes, hand sanitizer, and garbage bags are important for preventing illness when the water supply is cut off.

5. Tools and communication

A good knife or a multitool can solve countless problems in an emergency.Whether it’s opening canned goods, repairing equipment, or preparing fuel.

We recommend that everyone keep a sturdy knife within easy reach. Check out our bestsellers in knives and tools.

Summary: Get started today

You don’t need to buy everything at once. Start with the essentials (water and heat) and build up your supplies over time. The most important thing is to have a plan before a crisis occurs.
