This time-consuming process required precision and training, and soldiers had to practice performing all the movements automatically in the midst of the chaos of battle.

Flintlock rifles were more accurate and had a longer range than the pistols of the time, but were slower to reload. A well-trained soldier could fire up to five rounds per minute, but in battle it was common to fire two to three. In close combat the rifle was often used with a bayonet attached.
